NZ Community Board Conference - Information and inspiration

Image
New Zealand Community Boards Conference 2017 Making 1+1=3         I had the privilege of attending the New Zealand Community Board Conference in Methven a couple of weeks ago.  Probably doesn't sound to most like it would be a highly motivating and inspiring way to spend the weekend and I did have people concerned for my sanity when I said that I was really looking forward to attending.  Well, I can report that it was interesting, informative and inspiring.  The calibre of speakers in attendance was very high and I have come home with a renewed enthusiasm for my role in our community. The current Cromwell Community Board One of the things that became really clear as I met and talked to elected members from around the country is that Cromwell is very lucky to have a Board that is able to make decisions directly with and for the community that we represent.  Many Community Boards around New Zealand have no (or very limited) authority or...

End of the holidays looming

Image
I'm sure most parents of school age children are looking forward to the end of this week and the return to normal routines from Monday next week.  The amazing autumn weather we have been having (becoming cold and windy as I type this) will have helped to make the holidays easier to bear and the inclusion of ANZAC day and Easter in the mix will hopefully have made child care options more manageable.  I know teachers are all gearing up for the term ahead, re-arranging classroom furniture, locating and making resources, and planning programmes. Fabulous autumn weather for the school holidays - photo from Heliview flights, Cromwell I'll be glad that lummox no.3, age 16, in Year 12 is back into a more normal routine next week too.  Teenage boys in general, and my youngest in particular have an amazing capacity for sleep.  He's mostly through 'grunt' stage and is usually quite a chatty young man - but when he is in extreme lazy mode he goes straight back to neanderth...

Reflections on the journey so far - six months on the job

Image
I've not managed to be a very regular blogger over the last couple of months - it is sometimes hard to make time to sit and reflect and to put those reflections into words that make any sense at all to anyone but myself.  I've also had a bit of time away with my husband in Bali to attend his eldest brother's wedding anniversary celebrations.  It felt a bit naughty heading away in term time (not something I have ever really done as a teacher) - but after Craig and I both lost a parent in 2014 we decided to say yes to family occasions and invitations and to try really hard to find ways to be there and connect with our wider family, particularly those we only see rarely.  We are really glad we went - it was an amazing experience. Brilliant times in Bali It is six months since local body elections so it is a good time to look back on the journey so far and to think about what being a member of the Cromwell Community Board is shaping up to be. There have certainly been...

Back to school and down to business

Image
I haven't blogged in a couple of weeks.  I've been busy settling into the new school year.  Planning, preparing, updating my first aid certificate and setting up systems and practices for my team so that we have a great year with a focus on the best outcomes for all the children in our classes.  I have a pretty new team this year at school and we are charged with making sure that our youngest students have the best possible start to school.  New Entrant teaching takes really special people and I am really lucky to have a bunch of amazing teachers this year.  Their classrooms are busy and active and the wee people starting school this year are going to have a great start to their school journey. New Entrant children on an outing in 2016 I don't have a classroom - I joke that I swan around looking important and playing with bits of paper.  In reality my role is extremely varied, challenging and rewarding.  One of my key roles as Deputy Principal is ...

Kumara and bacon frittata

Image
Summer seems to be missing - so, we needed a hot lunch today.  This is a quick, easy and satisfying lunch meal - makes enough for 8 decent sized slices.  Depending on the appetites and whether or not you throw a salad on the side it feeds 4-8 people. Kumara and bacon frittata  Ingredients 1 large or 2 small-medium golden kumara (sweet potato) 1 onion finely chopped 4 - 6 mushrooms diced 1 bell pepper - colour of your choice - I used yellow 4 rashers bacon - diced 2 Tablespoons olive oil 6 eggs 3/4 cup milk 1 cup fresh bread crumbs (2 slices toast bread in a food processor or grated) 1/2 cup grated cheese handful of fresh or teaspoon dried herbs of your choice salt and pepper to taste Method Boil the peeled and chopped Kumara until just tender - drain and set aside Fry the onions, bacon, mushrooms and peppers in a large pan (choose a pan that can also go in the oven) until the onions are soft and translucent Add the kumara and stir to coat with oil...

Community consultation, conversations and questions

Image
Many of you will have seen that my fellow Cromwell Community Board (CCB) member Robin Dicey posed some questions for our community in The Bulletin last week.  Like all of us on the CCB Robin is looking for ways to engage and connect with the community.  We all want to be doing the best for those that we represent and to be making decisions that reflect what the residents and ratepayers of Cromwell actually want to see in our great wee town.  So, well done to Robin for trying to get the conversation going on a range of issues.  I've popped an image of Robin's questions below - you can also find them on page 12 of The Bulletin dated 12 January 2017.  Robin has included his contact details for anyone interested in contributing to the discussion.  I would be very happy to be contacted too - anna.harrison@codc.govt.nz or via my Facebook page Anna Harrison Cromwell Community Board. One of the questions Robin asks is in regard to the level of community con...

Harry's ultimate burgers

Image
We have 1/2 a cattle beast in our freezer - that means there is a lot of mince to get through and there is only so much spaghetti bolognaise you can eat.  The lovely bloke has diversified into epic meat patties.  These are not your average patty - no, no, no - these are much, much more than that. Girl version with lots of green stuff in it Ingredients - makes 8-10 large patties 800g - 1kg beef mince 1 onion finely chopped 4 rashers streaky bacon - finely chopped 2 cloves garlic - crushed 1 cup fresh bread crumbs 1 egg 1 tsp chilli flakes 1 tsp smoked paprika 1/4 cup chilli relish or other really tasty relish We like this chilli relish to add a kick to our burgers (large handful of fresh herbs if you have them, a shake of mixed herbs if you don't) Method Place all ingredients in a bowl together and mix thoroughly - hands work best.  If the mixture is too wet add a couple of tablespoons of wholemeal flour or more breadcrumbs.  Make sure to season...
