Tip #5 - Overcoming Procrastination

Procrastination can be crippling.  Motivation and determination can be really hard to find and harness even when we know it is essential to get things done.  School assessments, exams and deadlines loom over us and the consequence of not getting on with the job can have an impact on choices and pathways for the future - but still we just can't find the push to even start - let alone finish.  So what's the problem?

Some of the common reasons that people procrastinate:
  1. Fear of the outcome - Fear of success, fear of failure, fear of looking like a fool.
  2. Helplessness in the face of complexity - the task seems to difficult, so we try to avoid it.
  3. Rebellion and laziness - resenting the task that needs to be done - actively choosing to put it off.
  4. Lack of motivation
  5. Lack of focus and fatigue - distractions are everywhere you must learn to ignore them.
  6. Not knowing where or how to start
  7. Perfectionism

What can you do to help you get things done?
Sometimes the first step is to let people know that you are struggling. Procrastination can become a crippling habit and can lead to becoming overwhelmed by the number and magnitude of things that need to be done.  Panic sets in and you become incapable of getting it done.  Ask for help, let teachers, lecturers and parents know that you are finding it tough.  Another key can be to get organised, make a plan and ensure you have people checking up on you to ensure that you follow through with it. Everyone suffers from procrastination at one time or other.  Don't let it be the reason that you don't achieve your goals.  Follow the link below for some further tips for overcoming procrastination.
