Enough with the musings on with the campaigning

I've had a week of stepping out of the shadows and putting myself into the public eye and I have been really appreciative of the positive feedback and messages of encouragement that I have received from many different quarters and for the offers of support and assistance.  I've continued thinking about what I can bring to Community Board and about what I value about living in Cromwell.  

I've read the candidate profiles on the CODC website click here to read them for yourself.  It is great to see a range of people passionate about our town willing to stand for public office.  I'm sure Cromwell will be well represented out of this bunch.  So, why should anyone vote for me... 

Mad Deputy Principal skills

I bring my mad Deputy Principal skills to the table.  I think there are probably quite a few cross over skills here including patience, negotiation, advocacy, active listening and problem solving.  I also do quite a lot of conflict resolution, sign language and a bit of singing - you never know when that combo is going to come in handy.

I bring a future focus.  I want to think about what comes next for Cromwell, to see the establishment of a clear plan for continued growth and development for our town that ensures we maintain the lifestyle that brings people here.  I want to ensure that we don't lose our open spaces, greenways and easy access to our lake and walkways.  I want to see the needs of families and young people taken into consideration when decisions are made.

A future focus is important to develop solutions rather than creating more problems
So, now I need to get my message out.  I've had some advice from more seasoned campaigners and I have a plan for what comes next.  I am busy preparing flyers and campaign boards to go out in our community.  I will be speaking at the meet the candidates meeting on Monday 19 September at the Golden Gate Conference Centre.  I will of course be out and about in our community in all the usual places at school, at the supermarket, at the pool and making the most of our fabulous environment.

Lamb Shanks with sweet chilli and black bean

This dish has a rich, tasty sauce. The shanks are browned and then cooked in the sauce until the meat is very tender. This can be done in the oven, crockpot, stove top or in a deep electric frypan. Best served with mashed potato sweetened with carrot, kumara (sweet potato), pumpkin or parsnip.  Ingredients Lamb shanks - 1 per person 1/4 cup black bean sauce 1/2 cup sweet chilli sauce 1 1/2 cups water 2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger 3 cloves garlic - crushed Method In an electric frypan Heat the pan on the highest setting place the shanks (no oil needed) in the pan, pop the lid on and brown on all sides - this will take 15-20 minutes.  Turn pan down to a simmer setting combine all the other ingredients and pour over the shanks. Place the lid back on and leave to simmer until meat is very tender approx 1 1/2 hours. Turn the shanks from time to time to make sure they are coated in the sauce. Lummox number three turns 14!

My youngest loves sport and plays anything going with anyone who's keen. Basketball is the latest passion and the Boston Celtics the team he's taken a shine to. So a basketball cake was the order of the day.  The cake is a chocolate cafe cake with butter cream icing. The large clover is store bought icing that can be rolled flat. The lettering and small clover are white chocolate.

Community consultation, conversations and questions

Many of you will have seen that my fellow Cromwell Community Board (CCB) member Robin Dicey posed some questions for our community in The Bulletin last week.  Like all of us on the CCB Robin is looking for ways to engage and connect with the community.  We all want to be doing the best for those that we represent and to be making decisions that reflect what the residents and ratepayers of Cromwell actually want to see in our great wee town.  So, well done to Robin for trying to get the conversation going on a range of issues.  I've popped an image of Robin's questions below - you can also find them on page 12 of The Bulletin dated 12 January 2017.  Robin has included his contact details for anyone interested in contributing to the discussion.  I would be very happy to be contacted too - anna.harrison@codc.govt.nz or via my Facebook page Anna Harrison Cromwell Community Board.
